Counseling for Women

Women Supporting Women

In a world where women are too often encouraged to compare and categorize each other, it’s important to me to be part of supporting women and helping to lift them up when they need it. Whether you are married or single, identify as LGBTIQ+ or heterosexual and cisgendered, a mother or not, when you seek support it is important to feel that your experiences are recognized in addition to the social pressures you face.

Feeling Not Good Enough

It’s easy to get caught up in feelings of not being enough. Women often feel that in order to be truly worthy and valuable, they must meet a long list of expectations. In their book “The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance,” Katty Kay and Claire Shipman discuss that while men overestimate their performance and abilities, women underestimate both even when their performances are equivalent.  Studies also show that women more often hold themselves back from taking action unless they feel that their contributions are perfect.  These feelings of “not enough” have a real impact on women’s self-worth, their confidence at home, work and in relationships, and their capacity to achieve their goals.

The Invisible Mental Load of Parenting

If you are also a parent, your life likely feels like a juggling act or a game of whack-a-mole.  Getting “caught up” on everything may be an impossibility. You may have heard the terms  “mental load” and “emotional labor” of parenting. These terms describe the often exhausting work of keeping multiple things in mind at all times. From the minutiae of keeping the pantry stocked to trying to be attuned and responsive to your child’s emotional needs, you may feel that you are always at the helm.

When life can be so overwhelming, we may find ourselves grasping to control things as much as possible. Add in social comparison and pressure during our age of Pinterest and Instagram, and you may also find yourself feeling like you need to go the extra mile and take on extra tasks and projects to be a good mom or employee. There may be little time left for self-care. And when you do engage in self-care, feelings of guilt or worry may creep in. It comes as no surprise that according to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 23% of adult women suffer from anxiety. With the impacts of Covid-19, this percentage will likely increase.

You Are Not Alone And Counseling Can Help

I do believe it is possible for you to live a more peaceful and joy-filled life. Thankfully, our degree of confidence and our ability to cope are not fixed traits. With focus and self-compassion, we can live more courageously and confidently. Through counseling, I am here to provide you with support to:

  • Challenge perfectionistic thinking and connect with your own wisdom and strength

  • Increase assertiveness skills and healthy boundaries

  • Strengthen parenting skills and effective communication

  • Learn strategies to decrease anxiety and stress and increase well-being

  • Identify your personal goals and take steps to achieve them

  • Strengthen your ability to be present in the moment with curiosity, acceptance and compassion so you can be more connected to yourself and others

Moving from Control to Empowerment

When we live from a place of control, our lives may feel contracted, tense, and stressful. However, when we live from a place of empowerment, we afford ourselves and others more flexibility and space to live, learn and grow. It may feel scary to loosen control on what we think we need to do and what needs to happen. Yet in our most important relationships, our partners and children do not want our perfection, they want our connection. When we have the skills to choose connection with ourselves, our friends and family, we can find more joy and meaning in our lives.
